Before moving west, I honed my craft at the Chicago Tribune. In between music gigs, I wrote about tattoo parlors, typefaces, bowling alleys, drinking mug collectibles, cherry festivals, laundromat fashion shows and marching bands for my weekly Hanging Out column.

From California, I've covered entertainment, design and art for New York TimesLos Angeles Times, The Credits and other publications including Fast Company, Wired.com and New Yorker.com. I've design pieces about Frank Lloyd Wright, illustrated manuscripts from the 14th century, graffiti, graphic design, artful wheelchairs and comic books.

After the New York Times ran my surveillance sculpture piece, Wired hired me to contribute weekly postings to its website. My roughly 500 stories for Wired included a Peter Jackson interview about "Hobbit" camera technology that earned a 2009 Mirror Award citation in the feature category.

Reporting on the arts for the Los Angeles Times, I shared a byline with Pulitzer Prize winner Christopher Knight on a museum story about the de-accessioning of art works.

For the San Francisco Chronicle I penned a weekly movie column Industry Buzz for six years.

For DGA Quarterly, Los Angeles Times and Wired, I've interviewed filmmakers David Fincher, Barry Jenkins, Christopher Nolan, Guillermo del Toro, James Cameron, Steven Soderbergh, Patty Jenkins, Quentin Tarantino, Todd Haynes, Karyn Kusama and Ridley Scott.

My TV coverage for The New York Times has encompassed Henry Rollins, Kathy Griffin and Bryan Cranston.
